LIVING WITH NARCOLEPSY IN AUSTRALIA

Di Spillane Living With Narcolepsy In Australia

Sharing Our Stories To Raise Awareness

Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence (CDH) Consumer Forum.

I am proud to announce that I was recently invited by Michelle Chadwick from Hypersomnolence Australia to become a member of the CDH Consumer Forum. I now have the opportunity to connect with consumers and other consumer advocates, to collaborate on initiatives that will benefit others within the Australian Narcolepsy communities.

Health consumers have been involved in planning and decision making within Australian health services at a growing rate. This is partly due to consumers becoming better informed about their rights and seeking out opportunities to participate, resulting in services which are better designed to meet patient and consumer needs leading to better health outcomes for patients. Research shows that even clinical research is of a higher standard when it is informed by the perspectives of the end users.

As a consumer representative, I will be providing a consumer perspective to help shape the future of people living with Narcolepsy. Consumer representatives act as an important link between the forum and the wider community, helping to ensure that the voice of the consumer is heard in the healthcare discussions that take place. This ensures that the decisions made are representative of the wider community and account for the needs of all stakeholders.

The purpose of the Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence (CDH) forum is to ensure that the voices of patients and their families are included in discussions about treatments, research, and policy. The forum provides opportunities for consumer advocates to collaborate with researchers, clinicians and other stakeholders to find new solutions and strategies for improving patient care. The forum also serves as an important source of information for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.

Since joining the forum I have been very busy keeping the narcolepsy community informed by posting in various social media groups on Facebook as well as fascilitating the June Living With Narcolepsy online monthly catch-up. My chosen topic of discussion was regarding clinical trials/studies and what to expect when you participate in one. I created a screenshow using slides to present this subject to everyone in attendance, and have made the slides available for everyone who wished to keep a copy for later reference. I have also assisted with updating the survey for the Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence (CDH) Advocacy and Awareness Registry which is available on the Hypersomnolence Australia website. I have also been involved in creating a factsheet about accessing Xyrem in Australia which you can read via this link: how to access Xyrem in Australia. This factsheet also includes information about how you can (if your qualify) apply via public hospital programs to have the cost of Xyrem subsidised. My next project is to prepare for this years World Narcolepsy Day, this will involve planning how the Australian narcolepsy community can work together to raise awareness of Living With Narcolepsy. I look forward to sharing more about these plans with you all soon.

The next Living With Narcolepsy catch-up will be held on Wednesday the 5th of July, 2023. If you have any questions about the LWN meetings please email us at livingwithnarcolepsy@hypersomnolenceaustralia.org.au

The Underground Railroad (official lyric video)

“The Underground Railroad” original song by Di Spillane

For more than 25 years, Harriet Tubman was trapped in the bonds of slavery before escaping, traveling alone mostly under the cover of night all the way to Philadelphia in 1849. Once free, she became an operator of the Underground Railroad — a secret network of people, places and routes that provided shelter and assistance to escaping slaves. She then spent more than 10 years making secret return trips to Maryland, risking her life to lead her family and friends safely to freedom.

Tubman sang two songs while operating her rescue missions, changing the tempo of the songs to indicate whether it was safe to come out or not.

She suffered a traumatic head injury as a young girl, probably in the 1830s. The injury resulted in her developing “secondary narcolepsy” or “posttraumatic hypersomnia”, after which, she had a lifetime of seizures, headaches, visions, and involuntary sleep attacks.

Tubman had earned the nickname “Moses” for liberating so many enslaved people at great risk to her own life. Her last rescue mission was in 1860.

“The Underground Railroad” Lyrics by Di Spillane

This great tale began with a dreamer

The voice in her head showing the way

Courage and strength can be found within

Trust and believe as Harriet once did

Cross the line and be free

Fight for your liberty

Hands of strength will lead you there

To help you escape to the promised land

If you hear the dogs

See torches in the woods

If there’s shouting after you

Don’t you ever stop

If you want to taste freedom

Break chains of ignorance for one and all then

Follow Moses and be free

When she calls you through the trees

The North Star will light the path

All the way to the promised land

On the Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

Will set you free

The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

Will set you free

Ignorance gains no experience,

Choose not to be a slave

You will be welcome when you land

Albeit as a stranger in a strange land

Cross the line and be free

Fight for your liberty

Hands of strength will lead you there

To help you escape to the promised land

If you hear the dogs

See torches in the woods

If there’s shouting after you

Don’t you ever stop

If you want to taste freedom

Break chains of ignorance for one and all then

Follow Moses and be free

When she calls you through the trees

The North Star will light the path

And you will escape to the promised land

On the Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

It will set you free

The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad

It will set you free

The Underground Railroad

I was inspired to write my song “The Underground Railroad” after discovering that one of the railroad’s most famous conductors Harriet Tubman remarkably managed to escape the bonds of slavery by herself, and then spend more than 10 years returning to Maryland to lead her family and friends safely to freedom. She did this despite suffering from the rare sleep disorder now known to be “secondary narcolepsy” or “posttraumatic hypersomnia”. I too have lived with narcolepsy since childhood, and despite having had symptoms for most of my life I didn’t receive a diagnosis until I was 49. So I decided to release this song on the 22nd of September, 2022 to coincide with World Narcolepsy Day to help raise awareness of this often debilitating sleep disorder.

“The Underground Railroad” by Di Spillane, available on all streaming platforms September 22, 2022.

About Harriet Tubman;

Lyric references: I used a combination of Harriet’s quotes and factual references in the songs lyrics;

“The Underground Railroad” was a secret network of people, places and routes that provided shelter and assistance to escaping slaves.

“This great tale began with a dreamer” (narcoleptics spend a large proportion in REM sleep)

“The voice in her head showing the way” (she experienced hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations hearing sounds or words.)

If you hear the dogs – keep going, see torches in the woods – keep going, if there’s shouting after you – keep going, don’t you ever stop” Harriet would warn them that these things may very well happen and that they must keep going. This famous conductor of “the Underground Railroad” never lost a passenger!

“Follow Moses and be free” Tubman had earned the nickname “Moses” for liberating so many enslaved people at great risk to her own life.

“When she calls you through the trees” Tubman sang two songs whilst hiding in the trees, changing the tempo of the songs to indicate whether it was safe to come out or not.

The North Star will light the path, all the way to the Promised Land” Harriet would guide the slaves to safety during the night, using the North Star to navigate.

The remainder of the lyrics are self explanatory “courage and strength” “choose not to be a slave” “you will be welcome when you land, albeit as a stranger in a strange land” “cross the line and be free, fight for your liberty” “hands of strength will lead you there”.

I would like to acknowledge the following people who helped me to make my dream of releasing this song a reality: Gail Page – backing vocals and harmonies, Rick Melick – piano, Edward Pollard – drums, Denis Surmon – bass guitar, Brett Sody for recording, mixing, and mastering at his studio Sody – Pop Recording Studios and Services, Norwood, South Australia. My dear friend Peter Nikolic for helping me with the songs original format, and my partner Nick Martin for encouraging me to believe and to follow my dream of releasing my music to the world. The difficulty in being diagnosed with this rare disease is why so many people go undiagnosed for many year’s. I believe that not only should doctor’s receive training in sleep disorders, teacher’s should too!

If a teacher was aware of what to look for, they may be able to help a student to get diagnosed sooner, after all, children spend more of their awake time at school than they do at home with their parents!
